Outreach Clinics
The prevalence of vision impairment in Indigenous Australians is more than double in outer regional areas compared to inner regional areas.
Outreach Ophthalmology Services are provided in WACHS Regional Hospitals in Kalgoorlie, Albany, Derby, Kununurra, Karratha, Hedland, Broome, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek.
Lions Outback Vision works closely with WA Country Health Services, Population Health Networks, Aboriginal Medical Services, local health organisations and community groups, such as Royal Flying Doctor service, across a range of activities. Outreach Services are funded by WA Country Health Services and the Australian Government Department of Health administered by Rural Health West.
Outreach services are coordinated visits by ophthalmologists to regional communities primarily in locations which host a regional hospital or medical centre where surgical procedures can be performed.
- Increasing access to surgical intervention for Indigenous Australians with diagnosed eye conditions and who have been placed on a waiting list for surgery.
- Collaboration with Primary Health Networks, other organisations and stakeholders to overcome barriers to surgical interventions.
- Facilitating integration and continuity of care across initial consultations, treatment and follow up for regional patients.
